“AND THEN WE EMERGED TO SEE THE STARS AGAIN.” - DANTE ALIGHIERI
Gran Paradiso is the only mountain massif that rises at 4,061 meters (13,324 feet) in the Italian territory.
September 14 - 17, 2022. Refugio Federico Chabod, Italy.
I climbed this mountain guided by Adventure Base (same tour guides from Mont Blanc). They are an exceptional company with outstanding service.
We drove from Chamonix, France to Gran Paradiso National Park in Italy. The van left us (4 climbers + Nacho, our guide) at the entrance of the park and we trekked for about 4 hours to Federico Chabod hut.
The next morning at 4:00am, we started our summit push. The whole day was a 10-hour climb through a glacier with crampons on, rope team walking, deep crevasses, blue ice, one steep ladder over an icefall, and the rocky summit had a short via ferrata section.
It was a memorable experience. The people, the food, the stay at the hut, the forest and the mountain itself.
This was the prep before attempting Mont Blanc but it wasn’t easy at all. It was a wonderful life-time experience.
